Triggered Abilities Referencing “This Battlefield”: Iascylla vs Azir, Sovereign
Which battlefield “this battlefield” means — and when it is locked in — was one of the most asked questions of the Vendetta season. The official FAQ answers with Iascylla and Azir, Sovereign as the contrast pair, citing the CR 359.3.f.1.–359.3.f.3.b series. The FAQ takes precedence over the CR.

Two sources of referenced information (CR 359.3.f)
Information used by abilities comes from two places. First: information referenced from the ability’s source or from a spell/ability’s targets — recognizable by words like “here,” “my” or “its” (CR 359.3.f.1). This is checked when the instruction executes (CR 359.3.f.2).
Second: information referenced from a triggered ability’s trigger condition — this is checked when the trigger condition is fulfilled (CR 359.3.f.3). For delayed triggered abilities, it is referenced when the ability is created unless specified otherwise (CR 359.3.f.3.a).
Official ruling: Iascylla vs Azir, Sovereign
Per the official FAQ: Iascylla’s delayed trigger refers to the battlefield that she held; Azir, Sovereign’s attack trigger refers to the battlefield where he is located.
The difference: Iascylla’s delayed trigger references implicit information from her trigger condition (the battlefield where she held), and CR 359.3.f.3.b. lets a linked ability reference that linked trigger condition’s information. Azir’s attack trigger references nothing from its trigger condition, which only checks the event of him gaining the attacker designation for the first time each combat. With no such anchor, “this battlefield” is checked at resolution: if he is not located at a battlefield, those instructions are ignored; otherwise his current battlefield is used.
The FAQ adds that future sets will use more precise templating for abilities like Iascylla’s.
More examples: what locks in, what checks live
- Lillia, Fae Fawn: the location she moved from is noted when her ability triggers; moving her to a non-board zone later doesn’t change where the Sprite token is played (CR 359.3.f.3 example).
- Akali, Deadly Weapon: “the battlefield I moved to or from” references her trigger condition’s implicit information — even if she leaves the board, it was checked when the ability triggered and stays available on resolution (official FAQ ruling, citing CR 359.3.f.3.).
- Yasuo, Remorseful: “here” is checked at execution — if an opponent reacts by moving him to base, “here” is no longer the battlefield where combat is ongoing and his attack trigger mistargets (CR 359.3.f.2 example).
- “Enemy” and “friendly” refer to the triggered ability itself and are checked on execution (CR 359.3.f.4) — gaining control of Yasuo does not disrupt his attack trigger.
FAQ
After Iascylla leaves, which battlefield does her delayed trigger’s “this battlefield” mean?
The battlefield she held, noted when the ability was created. Per the FAQ, her delayed trigger references implicit trigger-condition information, which CR 359.3.f.3.b. allows a linked ability to do.
What if Azir, Sovereign isn’t at any battlefield when his attack trigger resolves?
The battlefield-related instructions are ignored. Per the FAQ, his trigger references nothing from its trigger condition, so “this battlefield” is checked at resolution — his current battlefield if he has one, nothing otherwise.
My opponent removes Akali in reaction to her move trigger — does Hidden Blade still deal its damage?
Yes. Per the FAQ, Akali’s “battlefield I moved to or from” references implicit trigger-condition information, checked when the ability triggered and still available on resolution (citing CR 359.3.f.3.).
When is “here” locked in?
At execution of the instruction (CR 359.3.f.2). Official example: if an opponent moves Yasuo back to base in reaction, “here” changes and his attack trigger mistargets.
If Lillia moves and is then sent to hand, where does the Sprite token go?
To the location she moved from. Trigger-condition information is noted when the ability triggers (CR 359.3.f.3 example) and doesn’t change afterward.
