Legend Rules: Chosen Champion, the Champion Zone, and the Legend Zone
Every Riftbound deck is built around one Legend: it decides your Domain Identity, who your Chosen Champion can be, and comes with a legend ability. Many players wonder whether a legend is a permanent that can be “killed” — the CR is unambiguous. Based on the 2026-07-16 CR and the 2026-08-14 official FAQ.

What a Legend is (CR §103.1, §174–176)
Legends are Game Objects owned by a player (CR 174.1); they are not shuffled into decks and are not played during the game (CR 174.2, 174.2.a–b).
Legends cannot be Killed (CR 174.3) or Moved (CR 174.4) during regular play, and they are not Permanents (CR 175). They may have one or more Domains (CR 176), and your Champion Legend determines the Domain Identity of cards you can include (CR 176.1).
Legends can be targeted by spells or effects (CR 174.5) and can have passive, triggered and activated abilities (CR 174.6–174.8).
The Legend Zone (CR §107.4)
The Legend Zone is the space for each player’s Champion Legend (CR 107.4.a); the Champion Legend there is a Game Object (CR 107.4.c).
It cannot be removed, moved or displaced from this zone (CR 107.4.d). Some effects may add a legend card or token to the Legend Zone — these are not Champion Legends (CR 107.4.d.1); non-Champion legends may be removed and cannot exist outside the Legend Zone or Banishment (CR 107.4.d.2).
The Chosen Champion (CR §103.2.a, §108.3)
Your 40-card Main Deck must include a Chosen Champion: a champion unit whose champion tag matches the tag on your Champion Legend (CR 103.2.a.2). Official examples: Loose Cannon has the Jinx tag, so Jinx, Rebel or Jinx, Demolitionist qualify; Tibbers has the Annie tag but is a signature unit, not a champion unit, so it cannot be your Chosen Champion.
“Chosen Champion” covers more than the opening card: any champion unit with the same name counts as your Chosen Champion during play, wherever it is (CR 103.2.a.3).
Champion Zone: the Chosen Champion starts here (CR 108.3.b); it can be played from the zone as normal (CR 108.3.d) but cannot return there by normal means (CR 108.3.c). By default you can only play cards from your hand or your Chosen Champion zone (CR 419.1.a).
The 3-copy limit applies to your Chosen Champion — the champion plus up to 2 more copies in the Main Deck (CR 103.2.b, 103.2.b.1).
Signature card limits (CR §103.2.d)
A deck may contain only 3 total Signature cards sharing your Legend’s champion tag — 3 total regardless of name (CR 103.2.d, 103.2.d.1), all matching your Legend (CR 103.2.d.2). Signature cards are not champion units and cannot be placed in the Champion Zone (CR 103.2.d.3).
FAQ
Do I control my own legend?
Yes. Per the official FAQ: control of legends cannot change, but you do control your own legend — so “your legend” counts as “controlled by you” for effects.
Can I play my Chosen Champion straight from the Champion Zone?
Yes. It can be played from the zone as normal (CR 108.3.d); by default you can play cards from your hand or your Chosen Champion zone (CR 419.1.a).
Can a signature unit like Tibbers be my Chosen Champion?
No. The Chosen Champion must be a champion unit; signature units don’t qualify (CR 103.2.a.2 example).
Can my legend be killed or moved?
No. Legends cannot be Killed (CR 174.3) or Moved (CR 174.4), and cannot be removed from the Legend Zone (CR 107.4.d).
Can my Main Deck contain extra copies of my Chosen Champion?
Yes. The 3-copy limit applies — e.g. Volibear, Furious as your Chosen Champion plus 2 more copies in the Main Deck (CR 103.2.b.1 example).
