Battlefield Control and Scoring: Conquer, Holding, and the 8-Point Win

Scoring is how Riftbound is won: not by killing the opponent, but by conquering and holding battlefields. The CR is precise: two scoring methods, once per battlefield per turn, an 8-point victory — and a “final point” restriction many players never meet. Based on the official 2026-07-16 CR and the 2026-08-14 FAQ.

Two ways to score: Conquer and Hold (CR §194.1, §469)

Scoring is gaining a point through seizing or maintaining control over battlefields (CR 468). There are two methods (CR 469):

Conquer: gaining control of a battlefield you have not yet scored this turn (CR 469.1) — a player gains control of a battlefield after establishing control (CR 469.1.b).

Hold: maintaining control of a battlefield you have not yet scored this turn during your Beginning Phase (CR 469.2). The Scoring Step of the Beginning Phase has the turn player hold all battlefields they control (CR 315.2.b).

Beyond these, spells and triggered/activated abilities can grant points (CR 194.1.c), and when an opponent Burns Out they choose an opponent to gain 1 point (CR 194.1.d, 431.2.c).

Once per battlefield per turn (CR §470–471)

Either way, a player may score from a given battlefield only once per turn (CR 470). Scoring does two things (CR 471): you gain up to one point (CR 471.1), and score abilities at that battlefield trigger (CR 471.2) — conquer abilities on a conquer (CR 471.2.a), hold abilities on a hold (CR 471.2.b), each at most once per turn (CR 471.2.c).

The 8-point win and the Final Point restriction (CR §194.2–194.3, §471.1.b)

The default Victory Score is 8 points (CR 194.3). In a cleanup, a player with points greater than or equal to the Victory Score and more points than any other player wins (CR 194.2, 472); tied leaders keep playing until one pulls ahead (CR 194.2.b).

The Final Point restriction: when you would gain a point through Conquer while exactly 1 point from the Victory Score, you gain the Final Point only if you have scored every battlefield this turn — otherwise you draw a card instead (CR 471.1.b, 471.1.b.1). Points from non-Conquer sources ignore this restriction (CR 471.1.a.1) — a last-turn rush must touch every battlefield.

Official ruling: Swain, Visionary (Vendetta FAQ)

Per the official FAQ: if you conquer having played only Patched Porobot and Stupefy this turn, Swain, Visionary scores you 2 points total — 1 from the conquer itself plus 1 from Swain. Reason: Swain checks whether you played a non-token unit, a non-token gear and a spell, and such checks don’t care whether one card or several satisfied them.

FAQ

What’s the difference between Conquer and Hold?

Conquer is a one-time gain of control of a battlefield you haven’t scored this turn (CR 469.1); Hold recurs each of your Beginning Phases while you keep control (CR 469.2, 315.2.b).

Can I score a battlefield twice in one turn?

No — once per battlefield per turn by either method (CR 470).

How does Swain, Visionary’s extra point work?

Per the FAQ: one card can satisfy multiple checks. Patched Porobot alone is both a non-token unit and a non-token gear; adding one spell (Stupefy) completes Swain’s three checks — 1 point from the conquer plus 1 from Swain, 2 total.

I’m at 7 — does a Conquer give me the 8th point?

Not automatically. The Final Point via Conquer requires that you have scored every battlefield this turn; otherwise you draw a card instead (CR 471.1.b, 471.1.b.1). Non-Conquer points ignore this (CR 471.1.a.1).

If my opponent Burns Out, do I always get a point?

They choose which opponent gains 1 point (CR 431.2.c) — in multiplayer it might not be you. Burn Out: perform as much of the action as possible, recycle trash into the Main Deck, choose an opponent to gain 1 point, then finish the action (CR 431.2).
