Accelerate and the [C] Symbol: Official Shorthand Guide
The official Vendetta FAQ opens with a symbol shorthand table: [E] is exhaust, [M] is Might, [A] is “one power of any domain,” [C] is “one power of this card’s domain.” But [C] has an official exception inside Accelerate costs — you need FAQ plus CR 805 together. The FAQ takes precedence over the CR.

Official symbol shorthand (FAQ opening table)
- [E] means “exhaust.”
- [M] means “Might.”
- [A] means “one power of any domain.”
- [C] means “one power of this card’s domain.”
- Special case: in Accelerate costs, [C] takes on the domain of the unit, or turns into [A] if the unit has no domain or multiple domains (FAQ).
- In all other cases [C] is treated as the corresponding power symbol in all respects — it is just design shorthand.
The CR basis for [A] and [C] (§135.2.e)
[A] is the shorthand for the swirling “any domain” power symbol; as a cost it can be paid with power of any domain, and once added to your rune pool it can pay power costs of any domain (CR 135.2.e.5, 135.2.e.5.a–b).
[C] represents one power of a domain corresponding to the card’s own domain (CR 135.2.e.6). Printed [C] assumes the card’s usual domain but still means “one power of this card’s domain” (CR 135.2.e.6.a). On a card with no domain, [C] is processed as [A] instead (CR 135.2.e.6.b); on a multi-domain card, [C] can be paid with power of any of that card’s domains (CR 135.2.e.6.c) — official example: Defiant Dance is a Calm+Chaos spell costing [1][C], payable with [G] or [P].
The Accelerate keyword (CR §805)
Accelerate is a unit ability (CR 805.1), functionally short for: “As you play me, you may pay [1][C] as an additional cost. If you do, I enter ready.” (CR 805.1.a)
If the unit has one or more domains, the power portion of the Accelerate cost can be paid only with power matching one of the unit’s domains (CR 805.1.a.1); if the unit has no domain, it can be paid with [A] (CR 805.1.a.2). Read together with the FAQ special case: a multi-domain unit’s Accelerate [C] is treated as [A].
Accelerate is an optional additional cost payable only while playing the unit — you cannot pay it once the unit is on the board (CR 805.2, 805.2.a). Paying it creates a delayed replacement effect: even if the unit loses Accelerate during finalization, a paid cost still makes it enter ready (CR 805.2.b).
The effect replaces entering exhausted with entering ready — it does not enter exhausted and then ready (CR 805.6) — so it will not trigger abilities that care about units becoming ready (CR 805.6.a). Multiple instances of Accelerate are redundant (CR 805.4).
FAQ
Is Accelerate mandatory?
No. It is an optional additional cost (CR 805.2), payable only as part of playing the unit — never once it is on the board (CR 805.2.a).
How do I pay Accelerate on a domainless unit?
The power portion is paid with [A] — power of any domain (CR 805.1.a.2). The FAQ shorthand notes say the same: [C] in an Accelerate cost becomes [A] if the unit has no domain (or multiple domains).
What does [C] mean on a multicolor card?
Normally it can be paid with power of any of that card’s domains (CR 135.2.e.6.c — Defiant Dance’s [1][C] is payable with [G] or [P]). But inside an Accelerate cost, the FAQ special case treats a multi-domain unit’s [C] as [A] (FAQ takes precedence).
Is [C] on a domainless card useless?
No — it is processed as [A] instead: one power of any domain (CR 135.2.e.6.b).
Does Accelerate entering ready trigger “when a unit becomes ready” abilities?
No. Accelerate replaces entering exhausted with entering ready; it never enters exhausted and then ready (CR 805.6), so those abilities don’t trigger (CR 805.6.a).
